I started our kitchen remodel in earnest today. Check out the wall paper and flooring I found under/behind some of the crap ass cabinets.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I’m glad that someone in the very distant future will find this, when they pull the cabinets I built out of there.

They won't find the flooring. That's all getting ripped out.

Its like a trip through time, in wall form.

I think my last home had three layers of flooring dating all the way back to its original build in 1942.

it’s kinda like trees, you can date the house by peeling away the layers

When we had our windows replaced, we found some very dark, old ugly country wallpaper behind the bright ugly country wallpaper that we put up with for way too long. Times and tastes change, but you would think that some things are ugly for eternity.

Is that peel-and-stick vinyl flooring (the top layer)?

Are you going to mess with future owners by writing a snark filled message on the wall? Something like why are you messing up my hard work?

There are at least three layers. The house was originally built in 1925. Gonna start tearing them out tomorrow.

Sure is! Hideous stick on vinyl, apparently applied by a drunken monkey.

Looks like 1940s wallpaper - or later wallpaper sold to people with tastes stuck in the 1940s.

Careful. Lots of that old tile is asbestos.

You probably knew that, but I felt obligated to say something since not many people out there really have any idea.

Yeah, ACM tile isn’t as dangerous as the old pipe wrap, but it’s still worth being careful aroun d .

I have found other evidence that a major renovation was done in the late 40's, so I suspect this wallpaper is from then.

I do, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I'll be peeling the layers carefully, but if I find that stuff, I'm just gonna stick the new floor on top of it. That's what I did on the second floor.

N95 dustmask is probably advisable, as well as dusting off outside before removing the mask to minimize the chances of inhaling particulate. Maybe a Tyvex jump suit, if you’re a masochist who loves to sweat a nd really fear the mesolthelioma. Would you agree?

Good taste took a vacation for a period of time from ca. the late ‘60s to ca. the early ‘80s. Generally speaking, there’s always exceptions.

What? No, N95s don’t filter asbestos. Even if they could, they don’t provide a good seal against your face. And you definitely do NOT go dusting the surface off first, at least not with a broom or anything less than a HEPA vac. To keep from stirring fibers into the air, you w a n t t o spray the tile down with a surfactant, or water at the very least.

I was suggesting that vs raw dogging it altogether, but surprised a basic n95 wouldn’t provide at least some protection for such a job. I was under the, perhaps false, understanding that it’s the barbed shape nature of the asbestos which prevents the cilia from being able to epel the fiber from the lungs, thus causing cancer. Particle size didn’t much occur to me, but I’m clearly not an expert on the matter whatsoever. Aside from wetting everything down and keeping it wet, which would keep most of the fine particulate down, what PPE would you suggest as he use for the job as a layperson?

I also kinda figured making sure he’s outside in a fresh air environment as opposed to in an enclosed space with no airflow or filtering would be ideal when he cleans himself up, so he’s not covered in anything that he’d be inclined to inhale when the mask does finally come off, considering he’s probably not setup for decontam. Again, I’m obviously not on the pro level there, but as someone who’s been in that business what course would you suggest he take? Sacrificial clothes, carefully removed, bagged and tossed? Not trying to be contentious whatever, I’m genuinely interested for a pro stance. I’m asking for a friend.

No worries. The legalities and other specifics vary by state, but I believe that PPE and the basic techniques still apply. We would control the work area by sealing off doorways and vents with plastic sheeting first, then set up an air scrubber (basically a HEPA filtered fan). Probably overkill, as tile removal doesn’t usually release a lot of fibers...

A half-face respirator (like the kind used in paint booths) equipped with disposable P100 filters would keep that shit out of our lungs, as long as our faces were shaven so that it could seal properly. We almost never needed Tyvek suits for tile jobs, which are typically pretty easy to avoid getting anything on our clothes anyway.

The tile was wet down before removal, and placed inside a 6mil bag, which went into a second bag to ensure a good seal during handling. The work area was then cleaned with a HEPA vac, and if the mastic didn’t have to be removed too, then that was u s u a l l y it. Tear down the containment barriers, and stuff ’ em in the last bag.

My house had peel & stick vinyl tiles in the kitchen. They weren’t horrible, but the entire grid was about half a degree crooked. It gave me vertigo every time my eyes tried to follow the bottom edge of the cabinets. Lookd like a damn Esch er drawing.

The ‘98 Chevy Metro I bought from XJDano for $140 almost two years ago now. I’ve been rallycrossing it, and ran the Gambler500-Illinois in it ever since. It’s proven to be one tough sumbitch. Read all about my exploits here.
